About Lánnang Stories
Brought to you by The Chinese University of Hong Kong Faculty of Arts and Department of English, in parternship with Lánnang community members and The Lánnang Archives. Lánnang Stories feature a local collection of storybooks in a celebration of language, culture, and identity. Dive into tales woven with the threads of Lánnang-uè heritage, each story a bricolage of tradition and modernity.
“Lánnang Stories” is an innovative digital initiative dedicated to the preservation and revitalization of the Lánnang-uè language, a minority language rich in cultural heritage.
This online platform breathes new life into traditional storytelling by offering electronic storybooks that resonate with Lánnang children and parents alike. Through interactive engagement and the convenience of modern technology, “Lánnang Stories” extends its reach to families and educational institutions, fostering a community-wide effort to embrace and celebrate Lánnang identity. The project’s dual approach of both printed and online publications not only amplifies its impact but also opens doors to wider recognition and support.
At its heart, “Lánnang Stories” is about connecting generations and nurturing the natural use of Lánnang-uè, ensuring its vibrant legacy continues to flourish in the digital age.

What do we look at when studying English? In the Department of English we study the language use of the English-speaking peoples. While the “English-speaking peoples” covers traditional native speakers, it also takes in the spread and transformation of English around the world, including in Asia and Hong Kong specifically. To study all these Englishes, we look at the whole range of language practices, from social media to creative writing, cinema to crime fiction, everyday mixing of Cantonese and English to government language policies. We strike a balance between the smallest details and the biggest arguments in English studies: from an individual poem to the diversity of global Englishes.
The English Department maintains world-leading research and teaching in the field of English studies. We contribute to English studies from local through to international contexts. We stress choice in research and student life, and we foreground the relevance of English in everyday experience. Through the global language we foster a diverse and international outlook. The Department develops a similarly international and interdisciplinary training in both applied linguistics and literary studies.
